Perch on their water-perch

Today I am making a plug for my current favorite poet (which is often whichever one I’m currently reading): Seamus Heaney. I am reading his book Electric Light, and it is simply beautiful. His use of language makes me want to dance and cry.

Everyone, find “Perch” and read it (try this link). Then look up the words in it that you didn’t know and read it again. Then read it again.

Then read it again.

Then marvel at it. It’s truly wonderful. I would ask you to notice especially his beyond clever use of diction, the beautiful sounds of each phrase, and the elaborate picture he paints with such simple yet well-calculated phrases. Notice how few adverbs and adjectives are present, and how carefully he chooses them.

P.S. I might have to name my first son Seamus. What a beautiful name. 🙂
